Transport around Glasgow

Getting around Glasgow by public transport is relatively easy and inexpensive, especially if you take advantage of ‘season tickets’ which can last from a week up to a full year.

Buses

There are a number of bus companies which run services not just in Glasgow, but around Scotland and down to England. The central ‘hub’ for bus services in and around Glasgow is Buchanan Street bus station which is only a 15 minute walk from the main campus. You can get information about bus services, routes, times etc from the SPT website  or visit the information office at the bus station. The buses which service the College are route numbers 41, 54, 60, 66 and 75 and those which stop close by Stow West are route numbers 41 and 60.

Underground services

Glasgow has a very long-established underground train service which runs from early morning till late at night, seven days a week. There are two circles, one runs clockwise, the other counter-clockwise, serving a ring of stations around the city centre. The nearest station to Stow City campus is Cowcaddens which is just a few minute’s walk away, and the nearest station to Stow West is Hillhead, which is around a ten minute walk from the campus.

Trains

Glasgow has two main stations; Glasgow Central Station and Queen Street Station, both within walking distance of the main city campus,

Taxis

Glasgow and surrounding areas are well served by taxis and mini-cabs. All taxis must be licensed by the local authority and the drivers are also carefully scrutinised. You should be safe in a taxi, provided that you always ensure that you travel in a properly licensed car which displays its licence number.

Private cars

You may be in the fortunate position of being able to afford to run your own car while you are a student. There are some things you need to think about before buying a car: fuel in the UK is comparatively expensive. Parking in central Glasgow is limited and often quite costly, and fines for illegal parking are high. Stow College has some ‘first-come-first-served’ student parking space, but it is limited. If you already have a driving licence from your home country, you will need to check that it is accepted here; otherwise you will need to pass a UK driving test.
