Stow College students walk the red carpet

Opening of Glasgow Film Festival

Stow College television production students will walk the star-studded red carpet tonight at the glamorous Opening Gala of the Glasgow Film Festival (GFF) – marking the beginning of a ten-day work placement.

One of the most prestigious events on Glasgow cultural calendar, Glasgow Film Festival runs from February 17 to 27 and will see the creative group of Stow College HND Television Production students enjoy their first hands-on experience in the industry.

Working day and night, the students will see first-hand what is involved in running the UK’s fastest-growing film event, which not only covers a wide-range of film genres, but also attracts thousands of visitors from every corner of the globe year-in, year-out.

Working with Glasgow Film Theatre, the Creative Industries students will be thrown in at the deep end on opening night, hosting a Q&A session with the cast and crew of French film Potiche, which receives its UK premier at the Gala event.

At the request of the festival organisers, Stow College’s Creative Industries department will document the ten-day schedule, with HND Television Production students attending the majority of the events to film and interview the directors and audience. The material will then be edited and uploaded to the Glasgow Film Festival website for cinema lovers all over the world.

David Hughes, Head of the Music and Creative Industries Department at Stow College commented: “Stow College are delighted to be working with the Glasgow Film Theatre in supporting the Glasgow Film Festival which will give our learners the opportunity to develop their creative talent.”

Robert Collard (19) from St Leonards in East Kilbride is in the final year of his HND Television Production course at Stow College. Robert said: “The HND Television Production course is varied and includes both theoretical and practical learning. Stow College lecturers encourage students to use the equipment for filming which gives you a real freedom to express yourself.

“We have learned a variety of skills in TV production as well as gained experience of working in the STV studios on the River Clyde. I am really excited to be working throughout the GFF.”

The HND Television Production course follows progression from an HNC and is carried out full time over two years. Students on the course study video production and editing, camera operation and technique, sound and lighting. Completion of the HND course can lead to relevant Degree programmes or a career in video production or assistant camera operator.
