Blog 6: Stowaways 09/02/2011

Latest Blog from Stowaways

Well, it has certainly been a busy season so far. We are now half way through the year and we have already seen the musical Bad Girls performed by the HND Musical Theatre second years, Marguerite by the BA Musical Theatre degree students, Memories of Water and Romeo and Juliet by the second year Acting and performance students, and what absolutely superb performances they were. The productions have involved approximately 120 students including performing arts and technical theatre. Congratulations to all on four superb shows, and many thanks to those of you who managed to get along and see them.

Since we last blogged Jill Armour (Musical Theatre student who recently appeared in Aspects of Love in the West End) enjoyed huge success as the princess in Aladdin at the SECC, Glasgow starring along side John Barrowman. John Jo Hay (an ex acting and performance student) is currently being seen world wide in his starring role in Neds, many congratulations to him, and Nicola Duffy (Musical theatre BA degree) also managed to get in that film.

The cast of Marguerite were over joyed to receive a phone call from one of the writers, Claude Schoenberg, wishing them all the luck for the Scottish Premier along with an email from Ruthie Henshall (the original Marguerite) which read......

"To the Students of the University of West scotland/Stow College, I hear you are doing the most wonderful show, Marguerite!! I hope it is a huge success for you and that you get as much out of it as I did. It was a privilege to work with Alain and Claude on something that was an original piece and Michele wrote such incredible music that haunts you forever.Good luck to you all. Enjoy." Ruthie Henshall.

Sad news.......UK world skills are now no longer running their musical theatre, dance or acting competitions. I think they think we have won it enough so they will just shut down the competition. Never mind, we will find something else to dominate in from now on.

Since our last blog we have now taken delivery of the new rehearsal rooms up at Stow West. We have an additional rehearsal room, singing studio, costume store and three student practise rooms all cleverly concealed in modular buildings at the back of Stow West. Many thanks to the fifth floor for helping us out with that. It is a great asset.

So whats coming up. We have a weeks long dance spectacular in March at the East Kilbride Village Theatre. Don't miss out on this one. Closely followed by Honk the Musical, The Degree Show Case and then May is full of the Festival of Theatre performances at EK Arts Centre and Rutherglen Townhall. So much to put in your diary. See you there.

All the best
