As a current student for SWAP Access to Medical studies, I would like to express my opinion on the course to any prospective students.
I started the course in August 2011 with high expectations of the course and was almost immediately very disappointed. As I completed highers last year in the appropriate subjects, I had the option between carrying on to advanced higher level for my application for university or I was accepted on to the SWAP course. I was strongly encouraged that the SWAP course was the better option as it would better prepare you for university and give you the qualifications needed for your application. Now, if I could go back to this time last year when I was making that decision, I would 100% chose to do the advanced highers.
The organisation of the course is diabolical, the course leaders are extremely unhelpful, the course overall is extremely demotivating. Out of the entire class, 3 people were given conditional offers for medical school, the 2 applying for dentistry have had successful applications, NONE of the 4 applications for vet school were successful and the pharmacy applicant was successful. Overall, out of a class of around 20 (at the start of the year), I would say that 6 successfull applications is a pretty poor figure. All of the unsuccessful applicants have been left more demotivated than ever before.
In addition to this, you are expected to achieve 80%+ in every class test in order to achieve a distinction. There are a few individuals currently on the course that have been scoring in the high 80s/90s for every test, however if they have dropped in one test for whatever reason, they have failed the course, making the past 8 months or so a complete and utter waste of time. One individual who was forced to leave the course as a result of missing a class test due to work commitments, missed out on a place at medical school because of the college forcing them to leave the course.
I could probably write a book on how awful this course is and how demotivated/ let down I am, however, I don't really have the time.
Hope this helps with your decision making
